ADL Walk Against Hate: Houston 2019

ADL Walk Against Hate was held in Houston, November 16th at Emery High School. The purpose of the event was to fight hate, bias, and antisemitism and draw awareness to discrimination and hate crimes, as well as inspire people to take a stand against it. One of the people honored at the event was Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal, the first Sikh sheriff’s deputy in the Houston Area, who was shot and killed in Cypress during a routine traffic stop.

In attendance were Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, District Judge Robert Schaffer, and “Fitness Czar” Samir Becic, among many others.

Mayor Sylvester Turner spoke at the inaugural event about the importance of diversity and inclusivity. His words moved the audience.

“One hate crime is one too many” he said to a clapping crowd.

People at the event took five laps around Emery High School to draw awareness to the message of ADL Walk Against Hate. Among the walkers were Mayor Turner, Judge Schaffer, City of Houston Director of Communications Alan Bernstein, and Samir Becic.
